Interviews

Hangin’ Out With Mitch Hedberg

1 Where are you from?
I’m from St Paul Minnesota.

2 What is the last movie that you saw?
Well I watch all the movies on the hotel movie system so a lot of them are second run movie features. I guess the last movie I saw was Walking Tall…with the ROCK.

3 What is the last cd you bought?
Oooh, that’s a good question because I just bought some cds. You know, I bought the David Cross cd. David Cross, the comedian.

4 What book or magazine are you reading right now?
You know I always like to read Spin, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and USA Today.

5 If you could have one superpower what would it be?
To be able to make people never stop laughing.

6 When did you know you were going to do this for a living?
When I first did it, man. I didn’t know anything about how to get into stand-up comedy, but when I did my first open mic, that was it. I was like all right, this is my job forever.

7 What is your quest?
My quest is to never be poor, and to be able to help my family out, and always be able to travel, and never be in jail.

8 Have you ever considered the big screen?
Yes I have and it’s considered me.

9 If you were an animal, what would you be?
A koala bear, because people associate with me so much. So I might as well be one…what the F- - -. Or a zebra.

10 If you were a schoolteacher, what subject would you teach?
I would teach any subject that I wouldn’t have to stick to the curriculum too much.

11 What is your definition of love?
Mutual understanding and the acceptance that the very intense fiery version of how it happens right away doesn’t last, but still something beautiful lasts and that’s all that matters.

12 What are you into?
Freedom and food.

13 What is your most embarrassing or bizarre moment that has ever happened to you while performing?
Repeating jokes. If I ever say a joke twice in the same show that is super embarrassing.

14 What is your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
Aaaahhh man, just sit in my hotel room and listen to the thunder and hear the raindrops hit the window. Just sit back. I love rain and I love it when I’m in a town that has a lot of rain.

15 What are your five favorite movies of all time?
Oooookay…yeah, sh- -. Exorcist, I loved It’s Pat, Ronin, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And another horror movie. Los Enchiladas. My movie.

16 What is your favorite childhood memory?
Playing kick the can with my friends.

17 What makes you sad?
People who are less fortunate than me.

18 If you could meet anyone from the past, present or future, who would it be and why?
I guess it would have to be Lenny Bruce, because I want to figure out if he was just a regular comic who because he came earlier than us was highlighted, or if in reality was a super genius.

19 Who are your influences?
I like all comedians. When I was young and watching Johnny Carson and all those shows, I laughed at everybody. So all comedians are my influences, but once I got into comedy and realized there was such a thing as a hack, aka a person who steals comedy, those were the people I don’t like. So as long as you don’t steal jokes or pander to what you think the crowd wants to hear, which is sometimes not the case, then I look up to you. So to be more specific, Eddie Murphy’s Delirious, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, and Geoffrey Rush.

20 If the whole world was your stage for one minute, what would you want to say?
I would say, everyone buy my cd, because then I would sell a lot.

*BONUS* Pepsi or Coke?
Both. RC.

P.S. from Mitch, “I’m in a new movie called Lords of Dogtown, with Heath Ledger, and we do a scene together so I won’t be cut out.” This man is very funny. Get his cd!!
